Porto es la segunda ciudad más importante de Portugal después de Lisboa. Tiene 237.559 (2011) habitantes, además de Vila Nova de Gaia, que forma parte de su área metropolitana; cuenta con 1 816 045 en su Área Metropolitana. Contornan el núcleo central de la ciudad de Oporto la subregión de Gran Oporto y de manera más amplia el Área Metropolitana de Oporto. Se encuentra en el norte del país, en la ribera derecha del Duero en su desembocadura en el océano Atlántico. Es sede del Distrito de Oporto, en la Región Norte de Portugal.

Como muchas ciudades europeas, Oporto es una ciudad antigua que cuenta con un amplio patrimonio histórico, aunque durante las últimas décadas ha sido sometida a una amplia modernización. Cuenta con el metro más largo de Portugal que cubre no sólo el Centro, sino también zonas de su área metropolitana como Senhora da Hora o Maia. Asimismo, el aeropuerto internacional Sá Carneiro ha sido recientemente ampliado hasta alcanzar una capacidad de 16 millones de pasajeros anuales.

Desde muy antiguo hay una pugna entre Lisboa y Oporto. Dicen que esta ciudad tiene un cierto aire británico, desde que se asentaron aquí los comerciantes de vino ingleses. Se dice que Lisboa gasta, Coimbra estudia, Braga reza y Oporto trabaja.

Su centro histórico ha sido declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco. Otros atractivos turístico-culturales son la Torre de los Clérigos, realizada por Nicolau Nasoni, la Casa de la Música y la Fundación Serralves dedicada al arte contemporáneo, y que es el museo más visitado de Portugal. En el margen sur del río Duero se encuentran las famosas bodegas de vinos aunque de ese margen del río ya no es Oporto sino Vilanova de Gaia. Dista de la frontera española (Galicia) unos 140 km que pueden recorrerse por autopista.

Tanto el país como el vino de Oporto (Vinho do Porto), u Oporto a secas, deben sus nombres a la ciudad de Oporto, que a su vez significa "puerto". Por su pujanza cultural, demográfica e industrial es considerada como la "Capital del Norte" portugués.

Barco Rabelo

O barco rabelo é uma embarcação portuguesa, típica do Rio Douro que tradicionalmente transportava as pipas de Vinho do Porto do Alto Douro, onde as vinhas se localizam, até Vila Nova de Gaia - Porto, onde o vinho era armazenado e, posteriormente, comercializado.

Sendo um barco de rio de montanha, o rabelo não tem quilha e é de fundo chato, com um comprimento entre os 19 e 23 metros e 4,5 metros de boca. A sua construção, de tábuas sobrepostas, tábua trincada, é nórdica, em comparação com a do Mediterrâneo.

Com uma vela quadrada, o rabelo era manejado normalmente por seis ou sete homens. Quanto aos mastros, os primeiros só usavam um, enquanto que os segundos usavam também um mastro à proa. Para governo, utiliza um remo longo à popa – a espadela. Quando necessário, os barcos eram puxados a partir de caminhos de sirga por homens ou por juntas de bois.

Vímara Peres (Corunha, c. 820 – Guimarães, 873), senhor da guerra cristão da segunda metade do século IX do Noroeste da Península Ibérica. Nascido na Corunha, na Galiza, vassalo de Afonso III foi enviado a reclamar o vale do Douro, em tempos remotos integrado na província romana da Galécia.

Vímara foi um dos responsáveis pela repovoação da linha entre o Minho e Douro e, auxiliado por cavaleiros da região, pela acção de presúria do burgo de Portucale (Porto), que foi assim definitivamente conquistado aos muçulmanos no ano de 868.

Nesse mesmo ano, tornou-se o primeiro conde de Portucale.

Considerado por muitos o ex libris da cidade do Porto, esta torre sineira faz parte da igreja com o mesmo nome, construída entre 1754 e 1763, a partir de um projecto de Nicolau Nasoni. Foi mandada erigir por D. Jerónimo de Távora Noronha Leme e Sernache, a pedido da Irmandade dos Clérigos Pobres. O seu arquitecto, Nicolau Nasoni, contribiu durante muitos anos para a construção da grande torre dos clérigos sem receber nada em troca e só alguns anos depois isso aconteceu.

Building designed by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, Casa da Música was inaugurated in 2005 and since then has become an icon of contemporary architecture, attracting visitors from many different parts of the world. Romanesque style construction began in the twelfth century however, it endured several changes up until the twentieth century, lessening its primitive coldness. The sacristy, cloister and the tiles that cover its galleries, as well as the chapel, are already from the Gothic period. A beautiful 13th century rosace stands out on the west front. The paintings by Nasoni, the carved gilt-wood altarpiece , and the silver altar of the Blessed Sacrament are all noteworthy.

Building of Gothic origin whose interior was covered with golden gild in the first half of the eighteenth century. The construction dates from the first half of the fifteenth century. This baroque work by Nicolau Nasoni was built in the first half of the eighteenth century. The Clérigos Tower is one of the most emblematic monuments of the city of Porto. Neoclassical lighthouse with a hexagonal format, ten meters high, dated from 1886. It has a red balcony and lantern and a small annex building with plastered walls painted white. The name "Molhe de Felgueiras" was given because it was built facing the stone of Felgueiras, to the West. It was modernised in 1945 and automated in 1979, and was controlled from a distance from the Leça lighthouse. It underwent conservation works in the 90's. Before being deactivated in 2009, the light has a range of 9 nautical miles, issuing a red light every 5 seconds. It currently only has the sound signal.

The romantic gardens of Palácio de Cristal, designed in the nineteenth century by the architect Émile David, have always been a special background for various events. It gets its name from The Crystal Palace which was built here in the 1960's. In 1956, it was substituted by the Rosa Mota Pavilion according to a project by the architect Carlos Loureiro. It currently occupies an area of approximately 8 ha. It has exotic plants and rare large trees, rose gardens, fountains, a pond with many birds and animals and a children's playground. Lime tree avenue is the most striking axis of this park and is lined by the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library and Galeria do Palácio (art gallery), Acoustic Shell and Chapel of Carlos Alberto.

Luís I Bridge

Planned by the engineer Teófilo Seyrig, a disciple of Eiffel, it was inaugurated in 1886 and it is composed by two overlapping iron decks. The bridge has 395 metres long and 8 metres wide, and its arch is still considered to be the world's biggest one in forged iron. Nowadays the upper deck is used by the Metro of Porto, connecting the area of Porto's Cathedral to the Garden of Morro and to the Avenida da República in Vila Nova de Gaia.

The Palace of Freixo, built in the mid 18th century, is one of the most remarkable monuments of Portuguese civil baroque designed by the architect Nasoni. The palace has a rectangular design and there are prominent turrets on the corners which are covered by slate roofs in the shape of pyramids. The interior of the palace is extremely flush. A lot of the compartments have 'frescos' and well executed stucco ceilings, some with oriental influence. Illusory painting with allegorical themes is commonly used inside the palace and was largely painted by Nasoni himself. The garden was clearly designed according to Italian tradition, with sculptures and a magnificent view over the River. It is now a Pousada de Portugal, preserving the entire façade of its buildings which were classified as a National Monument since 1910. The Pousada consists of two separate buildings that are connected: the Palace and the Harmonia Mill, both of them prepared to house large events and meetings.

Founded in 1833, the Antigo Museu Portuense de Pinturas e Estampas (Old Porto Museum of Painting and Prints) was the first public art museum in Portugal. Housed, since 1940, in the Palácio dos Carrancas (Carrancas Palace) and built at the end of the 18th Century by a wealthy Porto family, it is classified as a heritage site. Denominado originalmente como Real Teatro de São João, a sua primitiva edificação foi erguida em 1794 por determinação de Francisco de Almada e Mendonça, com projecto do arquitecto italiano Vicente Mazzoneschi, que havia sido cenógrafo do Teatro de São Carlos em Lisboa. A Igreja de Santo Ildefonso está localizada na Praça da Batalha, freguesia de Santo Ildefonso, no centro da cidade do Porto, em Portugal.

A igreja foi reconstruída a partir de 1730, por se encontrar em ruínas a primeira igreja, e ficou concluída em 1739, sendo dedicada a Santo Ildefonso de Toledo.

A fachada é composta por duas torres sineiras com dentilhões nas cornijas, rematadas em cada face por esferas e frontões de fantasia. Por cima do entablamento ergue-se o nicho do padroeiro. Guarnecem as paredes azulejos de Jorge Colaço (1932), com cenas da vida de Santo Ildefonso e alegorias da Eucaristia.

A nave é de tipo poligonal em estilo proto-barroco, com tecto em madeira e estuques ornamentais repetidos nas paredes. Os altares laterais são obras neo-clássicas e os colaterais são de talha rococó. O retábulo em talha barroca é rococó da segunda metade do século XVIII.

A DESPEDIDA DO SENHOR PADRE

No jantar de despedida, depois de 25 anos de trabalho à frente da paróquia, o padre discursa:
- A primeira impressão que tive desta paróquia foi com a primeira confissão que ouvi. A pessoa confessou ter roubado um aparelho de TV, dinheiro dos seus pais, a empresa onde trabalhava, além de ter aventuras amorosas com as esposas dos amigos.

Também se dedicava ao tráfico de drogas e havia transmitido uma doença venérea à própria irmã. Fiquei assustadíssimo. Com o passar do tempo, entretanto, conheci uma paróquia cheia de gente responsável, com valores, comprometida com sua fé.
Atrasado, chegou então o Presidente da Câmara para prestar uma homenagem ao Padre. Pediu desculpas pelo atraso e começou o discurso:
- Nunca vou esquecer o dia em que o Padre chegou à nossa paróquia. Como poderia? Tive a honra de ser o primeiro a me confessar.
Seguiu-se um silêncio assustador.

MORAL DA HISTÓRIA: Nunca se atrase!

Mas quando se atrasar, fique de boca fechada!!
